How to deal with your parents when they get old?

Remember the unconditional love that your parents gave to you? They fed you, bathed you, sent you to school, and took care of you.

As a child, you thought that your parents would live forever. They were there for you when you took your first step. When you got married and had children of your own.

And now they are old, and its time for you to take good care of them.

So how do you talk to your parents about their getting older? You should be able to talk about these things with your parents casually. Being close to your parents would make it easier for them to tell you how they feel regarding their health, concern and for you to ask them how they really feel about themselves. Taking good care of them doesn’t mean that you stop them from doing what they want. Even if they are older, you should allow your parents to continue doing what they used to do, like walking around or cleaning the house. Doing these things makes them feel better.

It’s also important to pay close attention to their health. “The concept of health should start even before they become older”. Going to the doctor for a general check-up, especially when your parents reach 60, is a good idea and is a must. It is important to talk about their health.

Communication lines should always open, it is very important especially if you don’t live with them. If your parents are getting older, you’d naturally want to make sure they’re taking care of themselves and staying healthy. Here are some tips that you can help them.

1. Always keep in touch. I think this the best way to help your parents especially when they’re not living with you. Keep in touch by calling them over the phone or visiting them during weekends with your kids. A kid in the house always makes them happy. Ask your parents if you can accompany them to doctors visit to keep you updated about their health.

2. Have a friendly environment for elderly. Especially if they live with you. Sometimes older people is becoming moody, they are easily irritated by small things. Like noise in the house, foods, sometimes even with you they get irritated. In this case you should understand them.

3. Know the health history of your parents. You should know your parents doctor and their contact numbers. The list of your parents’ medication and what they’re for. Your parents’ medical records. List of your parents’ allergies and major medical problems.

4. Always pay attention. Even if your parents don’t want you to be at their side always. Make sure you always pay attention to their needs.
5. Take good care of yourself. Taking care of elderly is quite demanding. And there is such a thing as “caregiver stress”. In this case, don’t afraid to ask for or receive help, especially from your siblings or other members of the family, this will allow you to create a strong bond with them.
